Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds and Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson dropped the gloves in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, and Ericsson may have hit the ice before the gloves did.
Simmonds made quick work of the Detroit blue liner, taking him down with a single punch behind the ear. The 28-year-old Flyers forward is a hard-nosed veteran with his fair share of fight cards, but this was one of his most impressive results — especially considering Simmonds’ lone punch came with his off-hand.
Luckily, Ericsson managed to avoid suffering any serious physical damage in the short-lived bout. His pride, on the other hand…well, that’s going to need some rehabilitation.
