Vancouver Canucks Score Twice in Third, Can’t Come Back Against Panthers

After Roberto Luongo stonewalled them for two periods, the Vancouver Canucks managed to get within one goal, but could not get the game to overtime.

Close, but not close enough for the Vancouver Canucks.

After trailing 3-0 early in the third period, they were finally able to beat former Canuck Roberto Luongo. They did so twice, but could not get the tying goal despite pulling the goalie with two minutes remaining.

After Luongo turned aside several shots in those final minutes, the Panthers sealed the victory with an empty-net goal by Vincent Trocheck.

Vancouver continues to alternate wins and losses, which is great for avoiding extended losing streaks. Not so good, though, if you are trying to climb into a playoff spot.

Aleksander Barkov, Derek MacKenzie, and Aaron Ekblad put the Panthers up 3-0. Luongo finished with 37 saves, including 14 in the final frame.

Final Score:

1 2 3 T
Panthers 1 1 2 4
Canucks 0 0 2 2

Canucks Three Stars:

Troy Stecher

D, Vancouver Canucks

Stecher finished with a team-high eight shots, including one on the power play which turned into Daniel Sedin‘s ninth goal. He also was solid in his own end, blocking a pass from Jagr to deny a tap-in goal.

Jacob Markstrom

G, Vancouver Canucks

Despite allowing three goals, Markstrom finished the evening with 38 saves. The former Panther kept the Canucks in the game, even after Vancouver was outshot 31-23 through two periods.

Jack Skille

RW, Vancouver Canucks

Third goal in two games. ‘Nuff said.

The Vancouver Canucks now have a quick turnaround. They head to Washington, DC to play Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals starting tomorrow at 2 PM Pacific.
