AP source: Sharks D Blake to retire

San Jose Sharks defenseman Rob Blake is planning to announce his

retirement from the NHL.

A person with knowledge of his plans told The Associated Press

that Blake will hole a news conference Friday to announce the end

of his 20-year career. The person spoke on condition of anonymity

because the announcement has not been made. Comcast SportsNet Bay

Area first reported Blake’s retirement plans.

The 40-year-old Blake had 240 goals and 537 assists in his

career with Los Angeles, Colorado and San Jose. He went to the

Stanley Cup finals in 1993 with the Kings and won it all in 2001

with Colorado. He was unable to lead the Sharks that far, losing in

the Western Conference finals this year to Chicago after San Jose

posted the NHL’s second-best record.

Blake won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman for

Los Angeles in 1998.
