BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Sabres forward Scott Wilson will miss eight to 10 weeks after having surgery for a broken ankle.

The Sabres provided the update Monday, a day after Wilson was hurt in practice. Wilson played a dependable checking-line role and had six goals and 14 points in 49 games after the Sabres acquired him in a trade with Detroit in December.

Buffalo also announced forward Alexander Nylander was one of three players assigned to its American Hockey League affiliate in Rochester. The demotion is the latest setback for the Sabres' 2016 first-round draft pick, who has appeared in just seven NHL games.

Also sent to Rochester were defensemen Brendan Guhle and Brandon Hickey.

Buffalo also acquired defenseman Jack Dougherty in a trade that sent forward Nicholas Baptiste to the Nashville Predators.

Dougherty was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft and has spent the past two-plus seasons in the minors where he has three goals and 26 points in 141 games. He's reunited with Sabres second-year coach Phil Housley, who previously coached the Predators defensemen.

Baptiste was traded a day after he cleared waivers and assigned to the minors. He was Buffalo's second-round pick in the 2013 draft and has seven goals and 10 points in 47 NHL games over the past two seasons.

Buffalo opens the season hosting the Boston Bruins on Thursday.
