Report: Sharks to sign Cup-winning goalie

Goaltender Antti Niemi agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract

with the San Jose Sharks Wednesday, the

San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Niemi, who won the Stanley Cup as the starting goaltender for

the Chicago Blackhawks last season, became an unrestricted free

agent after Chicago walked away from a $2.75 million contract that

was awarded to him in arbitration.

The team made the surprise move due to salary cap

constraints.

Niemi, 27, joins fellow Finnish goaltender Antero Niittymaki,

who signed with San Jose earlier this summer.

The Sharks had been looking for a starting goaltender after

longtime netminder Evgeni Nabokov signed with a club in his native

Russia.

San Jose was eliminated in the Western Conference finals last

season by Chicago 4 games to 2.

Niemi will face his former team for the first time in Chicago on

Nov. 24.
