Quick's shutout helps Kings keep rolling, 4-0 over Canadiens

MONTREAL (AP) Jonathan Quick stopped 40 shots for his 46th career shutout, Adrian Kempe and Tyler Toffoli scored 11 seconds apart in the first period and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 on Thursday night.

Anze Kopitar and Kurtis MacDermid also scored for the Western Conference-leading Kings (8-1-1), who beat the Canadiens 5-2 last week in Los Angeles.

The Canadiens (2-7-1) thought their goal-scoring woes were behind them when they beat Florida 5-1 on Tuesday night, but the bad luck and worse shooting were back in force as they outshot Los Angeles 40-27. It was Quick's second shutout this season and came in his 500th career game..

Quick, the 72nd overall draft pick in 2005 who led the Kings to Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014, improved his career record to 266-168-54.

PENGUINS 2, JETS 1, OT

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Phil Kessel's 300th career goal at 1:07 of overtime lifted Pittsburgh past Winnipeg.

Kessel, who also scored the overtime winner against Edmonton on Tuesday, became the 18th American-born layer to reach 300 career goals and the second active behind Minnesota's Zach Parise.

Kessel stripped Patrik Laine of the puck at his own blue line and went the other way on a breakaway. Kessel, with nine points in his last seven games, snapped a wrist shot between the pads of Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck for the winner.

Conor Sheary scored his fifth for the Penguins, who won for the fifth time in six games. Pittsburgh has won seven of nine since losing the first two games of the season.

Pittsburgh also won its 17th straight home game against the Jets dating back to March 24, 2007.

Matt Murray stopped 30 shots to win his seventh straight since allowing 11 goals on 65 shots in his first two appearances.

Josh Morrissey scored his second for the Jets, who had won four of their previous five.

RANGERS 5, COYOTES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Pavel Buchnevich scored twice and added an assist, rookie Boo Nieves had three assists to lead the New York Rangers beat winless Arizona for just their third victory of the season.

Michael Grabner had two goals, Chris Kreider also scored and Ondrej Pavelec stopped 27 shots for New York.

The Rangers shook up their line combinations and played with a traditional lineup consisting of 12 forwards and six defensemen for the first time in a week. It helped them beat Arizona for the eighth straight time, dating back to March 24, 2014.

Anthony Duclair and Clayton Keller scored, and Adin Hill made 24 saves as the Coyotes fell to 0-9-1. The loss spoiled the return of former Rangers star Derek Stepan to Madison Square Garden for the first time since he was traded to Arizona along with goalie Antti Raanta in the offseason.

LIGHTNING 3, RED WINGS 2

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov became the seventh set of teammates in NHL history to start the season with point streaks of at least 11 games, leading surging Tampa Bay past Detroit.

Kucherov got his 12th goal in the first period, and setup Stamkos' power-play goal from the low left circle that put Tampa Bay (9-1-1) up 2-1 at 6:22 of the third.

The duo also tied Martin St. Louis' team season-opening point streak set in 2009-10.

Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy made 29 saves in his 100th NHL game and 50th win (50-33-8).

Frans Nielsen had two goals and Jimmy Howard stopped 35 shots for the Red Wings (4-6-1), who have lost six straight (0-5-1). Detroit has lost nine straight games against Tampa Bay.

After Brayden Point made it 3-1 at 17:04, Nielsen cut the deficit to one on the power play with 1:49 to play.

BRUINS 2, SHARKS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Danton Heinen scored both goals and Anton Khudobin made 36 saves to lift Boston past San Jose.

Joe Thornton scored for the Sharks, who went 1 for 6 on the power play. They had a chance in the final two minutes after Brandon Carlo went off for slashing and got three shots while creating havoc in front of Khudobin but couldn't capitalize.

Heinen scored his second of the game and broke a second-period tie when he tucked a shot inside the left post after Marc -Edouard Vlasic misplayed the puck in the corner at 13:27.

PANTHERS 7, DUCKS 3

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Radim Vrbata recorded his seventh career hat trick to lift Florida past Anaheim.

Evegenii Dadanov scored two goals and Vincent Trocheck and Aleksander Barkov each had a goal and two assists for the Panthers while Owen Tippett, the youngest player in the NHL at 18, scored his first career goal. James Reimer made 31 saves. Thirteen players recorded points for the Panthers.

Kalle Kossila scored his first NHL goal for Anaheim and Andrew Cogliano and Logan Shaw also scored. John Gibson allowed six goals on 17 shots in two periods. Gibson was replaced by Reto Berra to start the third period. Berra stopped three shots.

HURRICANES 6, MAPLE LEAFS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Josh Jooris scored twice, Teuvo Teravainen had a three-point night and Carolina beat Toronto.

Victor Rask scored midway through the second period to give Carolina the lead and Brock McGinn and Jooris added insurance goals in the third. Elias Lindholm and Teravainen also scored for the Hurricanes, who ended a two-game losing skid.

Auston Matthews, Zach Hyman and Dominic Moore had the goals for Toronto.

SENATORS 5, FLYERS 4

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Jean-Gabriel Pageau had a goal and two assists, Erik Karlsson added two assists and Ottawa held off Philadelphia.

The Flyers appeared to score midway through the third period but after a coach's challenge the goal was reversed due to goaltender interference.

Less than a minute later, Tom Pyatt scored at 10:33 to give the Senators a 5-2 lead before Ivan Provorov and Sean Couturier cut that lead to 5-4 with goals three minutes apart later in the period.

Dion Phaneuf, Mark Borowiecki and Mark Stone also scored for Ottawa. Craig Anderson made 36 saves.

Jakub Voracek and Travis Konecny had the other goals for Philadelphia, while Michal Neuvirth stopped 22 shots.

WILD 6, ISLANDERS 4

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal had a goal and assist, and Luke Kunin and Zack Mitchell each scored their first NHL goals to lead Minnesota.

Marcus Foligno, Jason Zucker and Jonas Brodin also scored for Minnesota. Devan Dubnyk stopped 29 shots to win for the second time in six starts this season for the Wild.

Anthony Beauvillier, Nick Leddy, Anders Lee and Mathew Barzal scored for New York, which had won three in a row. Thomas Greiss finished with 27 saves.

Staal scored short-handed to cap a three-goal first-period burst for Minnesota in 7:26. He later assisted on Kunin's tally as the rookie became the first player in Wild history to score short-handed for his first NHL goal, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

OILERS 5, STARS 4

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Matt Benning scored the tiebreaking goal with 2:27 remaining and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two goals as Edmonton finally found its offensive touch in a win over Dallas.

Connor McDavid and Patrick Maroon also scored for the Oilers, who had scored an NHL-low 15 goals through the first eight games. Cam Talbot stopped 28 shots.

Jamie Benn struck twice for the Stars, and Alexander Radulov and Esa Lindell also scored for Dallas in its second straight loss. Ben Bishop finished with 30 saves.

Benning's point shot hit Radulov and got past Bishop to break the fourth and final tie and help Edmonton to the win.

CANUCKS 6, CAPITALS 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Sven Baertschi had two goals and an assist to lead the Vancouver to its fourth straight win.

Derek Dorsett, with his team-leading sixth of the season, and Bo Horvat each added a goal and an assist for Vancouver. Thomas Vanek and Markus Granlund also scored, and Brock Boeser added three assists as the Canucks' 29th-ranked power play went 3 for 6.

Anders Nilsson made 25 saves for his third victory in four starts.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Chandler Stepheson, with his first NHL goal, scored for Washington. Braden Holtby allowed five goals on 22 shots before getting pulled with five minutes left in the second period. Philipp Grubauer came on and finished with seven saves.

Coming off a successful 4-1-0 road trip where Nilsson picked up shutouts in two of his first three starts after signing in the offseason to be Jacob Markstrom's backup, the surprising Canucks showed zero letdown in grabbing a 3-0 lead in a dominant first period.
