Vegas doesn’t always get everything right. That’s just the nature of gambling. But when the New York Islanders head coach is a +210 to be the first NHL to be fired, they might be on to something.
The New York Islanders are on one of those slides. They’ve lost four of their last five. Two of those were against the Tampa Bay Lightning, in which the Isles lost by a combined scored of 10-2.

Now Vegas is coming in, saying that Capuano is a sure favorite to be the first coach fired this season.

At a +210 by Bovada, Capuano actually ranks second amongst coach after Vancouver Canucks Willie Desjardins at a +200. So according to Vegas, Jack is at least marginally safe.
But let’s be honest. Do we actually think that Willie Desjardins is going to be fired? Ok, his team is playing like a dog. But this Vancouver Canucks team wasn’t built to compete in the upper echelons of the NHL.
Even a playoff birth would be something shy of a miracle. Willie was brought in to oversee the project and the project ain’t done yet. Although, if we’re going to continue that school analogy, it’s due real soon. So take that +200 with a grain of salt.
That leaves Jack Capuano with sole possession of the number one spot. The next candidate isn’t even close. Laviolette at +650? Sure, Nashville has stumbled, but they’ve won three of their last five, and those two losses were in the shootout. Nashville is going to be fine.
Same goes for Dave Tippett. The Arizona Coyotes just won a power struggle with the ex-GM and was promoted for it. Less than a year later he’s going to be fired? It’s possible, stranger things have happened. Like a 26-year-old being given a GM job…
