Montreal Canadiens: Carey Price On His Way To Habs Wins Record

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 11:13 p.m. ET

The Montreal Canadiens have had many great goaltenders in their 100-plus year history. Carey Price looks poised to top them all when it comes to the category that matters most – winning.

The Montreal Canadiens edged the Washington Capitals 2-1 last night. It was a win that leaves the Habs within shouting distance of first place in the overall standings with a few games in hand. The win was also a great bounce back from a poor performance against the San Jose Sharks a night earlier.

It was also Carey Price’s 250th win as a Montreal Canadiens goaltender. It’s a long way from Martin Brodeur’s 691 career victories. However, Price is in some rarified air when it comes to Canadiens netminders.

This is Price’s 10th season with the Habs. He had some ups and downs early on, but has clearly emerged as one of the best goaltenders in the history of the franchise. That’s saying a lot. Patrick Roy was among the best ever in hockey history. Ken Dryden never lost. The goalie of the year award is named after a former Hab. Jacques Plante backstopped five straight Stanley Cups.

Yet, with all of those amazing goaltenders, Price’s name has to be thrown right in alongside them. His 250 victories ranks fourth all-time with the Canadiens. At 29 years of age, Price has a long way to go to try to catch the three Hall-of-Famers in front of him.

Price set to pass one of Habs greatest ever later this season

Dryden will be the next superstar to be passed by Price. He had 258 wins and Price will in all likelihood reel him in by the end of January. Now, Dryden has six Stanley Cups to his name. We can hope Price gets there one day, but that may be a bit unrealistic.

The only other goaltenders ahead of Price on the Habs wins list are Plante and Roy. Plante is in first with 314 while Roy piled up 289 before being dealt to the Colorado Avalanche. This means with 65 more career victories, Price would have the most in franchise history.

The Anahim Lake, British Columbia native is on pace for 43 wins this season. That would leave him with 276 on his resume. This would leave him 38 shy of Plante’s record. Price has twice reached that mark in his career, and likely will again this year if he stays healthy.

Not only is he on pace to become the wins leader for the 107 year old franchise. Price is on pace to beat the record at the age of 30. With nearly a decade of hockey left in him, it’s hard to imagine how many wins he can pile up in his career.
