Maple Leafs and Canucks starting goalies ejected after line brawl in Toronto

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:36 p.m. ET

Saturday night's matchup between the Maple Leafs and Canucks in Toronto was a bit of a nasty affair, with both teams racking up over 110 combined penalty minutes.

Tensions boiled over late in the third period when Maple Leafs grinder Matt Martin tossed the Canucks' Troy Stecher to the ground in the corner and began throwing punches. Seeing this unfold, Vancouver netminder Ryan Miller tossed his equipment and skated over to engage with Martin in defense of Stecher, a rookie playing in just his fourth career game.

The goalie getting involved sparked some full line shenanigans (though not many punches were thrown) that included Toronto goaltender Frederik Andersen skating the full length of the ice to get in on the action.

After the dust settled, Martin was handed a game misconduct for instigating, while Miller and Andersen were ejected after getting misconducts for leaving their respective creases.

After the game, some Canucks players were clearly not pleased with Martin, an established veteran, going after a smaller rookie. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson was especially livid.

In addition to all the penalties, there were plenty of goals and highlights from the contest. The Leafs ultimately came out on top, 6-3.
