Former Canadiens star P.K. Subban to receive award for being a good Canadian

P.K. Subban will make his much-anticipated return to Montreal when the Nashville Predators head into town for Thursday's game against the Canadiens. But before Subban faces off against his former team at the Bell Centre, he'll be recognized by Canada's Governor General for his contributions to the city of Montreal and its people.

On Wednesday, Subban will be presented with a meritorious service decoration, which is given to "recognize exceptional deeds that bring honor" to Canada. That award comes as a result of Subban's efforts as a philanthropist, including his pledge to help raise $10 million for the Montreal Children's Hospital -- where he has an atrium named after him -- back in 2015. The money raised by Subban goes to financially supporting families that are affected by a child's illness.

Subban, 27, spent seven years with the Canadiens before being traded this past summer for Shea Weber. The trade left many Habs fans stunned, as Subban's not only a fantastic player but also is a beloved and influential member of the community.

Despite changing zip codes, Subban remains committed to his charitable efforts in Montreal. Before the season, he sent letters to the young patients at Children's and ensured them that he would continue to fundraise and fulfill the promise that he made.

It will be interesting to see how Subban is greeted and welcomed back while wearing opposing colors on the ice Thursday, but it's clear that the city hasn't forgotten the great things that he did for the community during his time there.
