Florida Panthers to honor Jose Fernandez during season opener
Following the tragic death of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, many teams around Florida honored the young superstar in a variety of ways. On Thursday night, the Florida Panthers will become the latest to do so.
When the Panthers host the New Jersey Devils for a season-opening matchup in Sunrise, they’ll pay tribute to Fernandez with warmup jerseys and helmet decals featuring his No. 16.

It’s a classy tribute by the hockey club, and just another example of how far Fernandez’s reach was felt outside of baseball in the community.
The Cuban pitcher, along with two others, died in a boating accident in Miami this September. He was just 24 years old.
