Probation for drunk Zamboni driver

A man was sentenced to two years of probation after he admitted driving a Zamboni while drunk at a Minnesota ice arena.

Joel Keith Bruss, 34, of Apple Valley, Minn., was sentenced Thursday in Dakota County District Court after pleading guilty to gross misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, The Duluth News Tribune reported.

Witnesses called police after seeing Bruss driving the Zamboni machine erratically at Hayes Arena. When officers arrived, the vehicle was stuck partway off the ice.

Bruss was arrested, and a urine test revealed that he had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.32. The legal limit in Minnesota is 0.08.

Witnesses said he missed spots on the ice while attempting to resurface it. When he tried again, they had to tell him to turn on the water. Bruss also drove the Zamboni into the boards at the rink.

He was suspended from his part-time job after the incident. State court records show he was convicting of driving while intoxicated twice in 1999 and again in 2002.
