Dallas sends Jordie Benn to Montreal in deal with Canadiens

The Benn brothers are splitting up.

The Dallas Stars agreed to trade defenseman Jordie Benn to the Montreal Canadiens on Monday in exchange for Greg Pateryn and a fourth-round pick in 2017. Benn has spent the last six seasons in Dallas playing alongside his younger brother, Jamie, who is the Stars' captain.

Montreal had reportedly been shopping the 26-year-old Pateryn, who has 6 points (1-5) in 24 games this year. The defenseman has a cap hit of $800,000 and is signed through next season.

Benn will provide the Canadiens with some additional defensive help not only this year, but for the next few years as well. The 29-year-old's current deal carries a cap hit of $1.1 million through the 2018-2019 season. In 58 games for Dallas this season, Benn has recorded 15 points (2-13=15).

This is a relatively minor depth deal for both teams, but it's also a product of the trade market picking up in the days prior to the NHL's deadline this week. A number of notable names -- including Ben Bishop and Martin Hanzal -- have already been dealt, so it'll be interesting to monitor how the market plays out over the next few days.
