Ref takes nasty fall to ice after hit in Leafs-Blue Jackets game
NHL officials have one of the toughest jobs in sports.
Not only do they have to keep laser-like focus on an extremely fast game — all while skating on ice — but they also have to break up fights and avoid colliding with huge men moving very quickly.
Sometimes, though, it’s just impossible to get out of the way.
Referee Dean Morton learned that lesson the hard way on Friday night, finding himself on the wrong end of a collision with Toronto forward David Clarkson early in the first period of the Maple Leafs-Columbus Blue Jackets game.
No word yet on the severity of the injury to Morton, who left the game to be attended by medical staff and did not return.
