Montembeault stopped 23 of 26 shots in Thursday's 4-3 victory over the Kings, picking up the win in relief of Chris Driedger (lower body).
Driedger exited halfway through the first period, and with Sergei Bobrovsky (upper body) also unavailable, Montembeault stepped in and got the job done. Florida spotted him a 4-0 lead, and Montembeault did just enough to keep a furious Kings comeback attempt one goal short. If neither alternative is ready to go by Saturday's game in Detroit, Montembeault would likely get the call against the league's least threatening offense.
Montembeault was promoted from AHL Springfield on Wednesday.
With Sergei Bobrovsky (upper body) in doubt versus the Kings on Thursday, the Panthers opted to recall Montembeault under emergency conditions. Even if Bobrovsky can't give it a go, Montembeault will almost certainly not be in the crease, instead serving as the No. 2 behind Chris Driedger.
The Panthers reassigned Montembeault to AHL Springfield on Monday, David Work of WPLG Local 10 News reports.
Montembeault backed up Chris Driedger during Sunday's 8-4 win over the Maple Leafs since Sergei Bobrovsky (upper body) sat out. However, Bobrovsky is fine moving forward, so Montembeault will be shipped back to bus league, where he has posted a .916 save percentage and 4-4-1 record this year .
The Panthers recalled Montembeault on an emergency basis from AHL Springfield on Sunday.
This news comes on the heels of Sergei Bobrovsky leaving Saturday's practice with an unknown injury. It's likely that Bobrovsky will miss Sunday's game, and Montembeault could see action as a backup at least. The 23-year-old is 3-2-1 along with a 3.31 GAA and .889 save percentage at the NHL level this season.
