Hischier (upper body) won't play in Thursday's game against the Rangers.
Hischier was injured during Monday's loss to the Panthers, and he won't be able to shake it in time for Thursday's divisional matchup. It's unsettled who will fill in for Hischier on the top line with Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri, but Travis Zajac, Jack Hughes and Nikita Gusev are the top candidates.
Hischier is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
Hischier missed the second and third periods of Monday's loss to the Panthers and didn't practice Wednesday due to an upper-body issue, but it appears as though whatever he's dealing with isn't overly serious. Nonetheless, at this point, the 20-year-old pivot should be considered a longshot at best for Thursday's game against the Rangers.
Head coach John Hynes did not have an update on Hischier (undisclosed) after Monday's loss to the Panthers, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
Hischier will have a couple of days to heal up before Thursday's tilt against the Rangers. For now, his status for that game is still unclear. Travis Zajac or Jack Hughes would slot into his spot on the top line should he miss time.
Hischier left Monday's tilt against Florida with an undisclosed injury, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
As reported, Hischier didn't touch the ice during the second period and stayed in the locker room as the third period began. It's unclear exactly what the third-year center is dealing with but he may have been held from the game for precautionary reasons. Another update should be available after the game.
Hischier collected an assist in a 7-2 loss to Buffalo on Saturday.
The assist was Hischier's first point of the season and came on Kyle Palmieri's goal 37 seconds into the second period. Also worth noting is Hischier's ice time in the loss, as the Swiss-born center finished the game with 21 shifts, second-most amongst New Jersey forwards (Pavel Zacha - 22).
