Super Bowl XLIX was a matchup of the AFC Champion New England Patriots versus the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots defeated the Seahawks 28-24, giving them their fourth Super Bowl victory. The game was played on February 1, 2015, at the University of Phoenix Stadium, in Glendale, Arizona. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was named the game's Most Valuable Player with a Super Bowl record 37 completions on 50 attempts for 328 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions.

The New England Patriots finished the 2014 season with a 12-4 record and a number one seed in the AFC. They defeated the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional playoffs, and then the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship game. The Seattle Seahawks also finished with a 12-4 record and the number one seed in the NFC. They defeated the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Divisional playoffs followed by the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game.

Super Bowl 49 was scoreless until 9:47 left in the second quarter, when Patriots receive Brandon LaFell caught an 11-yard reception from Brady. Marshawn Lynch scored a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:16 left in the first half, followed by a Rob Gronkowski 22-yard reception from Brady. With 31 seconds left in the first half, Seattle drove 80 yards capped by an 11-yard touchdown reception from Chris Matthews from Russell Wilson. Seattle scored 10 unanswered points in the third quarter, a 27-yard field goal by Steven Hauschka followed by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Doug Baldwin. However, Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, one to Danny Amendola and one to Julian Edelman, to give New England a four point lead. On their own 20 yard line with 2:02 left in the game, Russell Wilson drove the Seahawks to the New England 1-yard line. However, Wilson threw a highly scrutinized pass which was intercepted by Patriots rookie Malcolm Butler, giving New England the win.

Katy Perry headlined the halftime show, with appearances by Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott. The game was broadcast on NBC, and total attendance was recorded at 70,288.
