Linebacker Chad Greenway, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and one of the anchors of the Minnesota Vikings defense for 10 seasons, is retiring from the NFL.

Greenway, 34, had said at the end of the season that he would only play in Minnesota if he did return for an 11th season but that he wanted to talk with his family and the Vikings before making a decision. As the NFL’s new calendar year begins this week, he and the team apparently picked the best time to make the break.

Greenway had played mostly on running downs in 2016 and started only nine of 16 games. The 17th overall pick in the 2006 draft, Greenway missed his entire rookie year with a knee injury but reached his peak in 2011 and 2012, when he had back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons.
