Titans add 5 new coaches, Mike Vrabel keeps 2 assistants
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The Tennessee Titans have hired five new assistant coaches with coach Mike Vrabel keeping a couple assistants.
The Titans announced the moves Tuesday.
Pat O'Hara will coach quarterbacks with Kerry Coombs overseeing the secondary. Shane Bowen will coach outside linebackers with Tyrone McKenzie in charge of inside linebackers. Rob Moore will coach wide receivers. Vrabel is keeping Craig Aukerman as special teams coach after having been an assistant for that unit. Arthur Smith also is being retained as tight ends coach.
O'Hara spent the past three seasons with the Houston Texans with Vrabel. O'Hara also played quarterback for 16 years in the NFL, World League and Arena Football League. He spent 10 years coaching in the AFL and six years coaching high schools. O'Hara played at Southern California and was a 10th-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1991.
Moore spent the past three seasons coaching Oakland's wide receivers and has 16 years of experience in the NFL as a player and coach. Moore worked with Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree in Oakland, and he coached Sammy Watkins in Buffalo in 2014. Moore coached wide receivers for four seasons at Syracuse and spent a year at Phoenix Junior College in Arizona after starting as a high school coach in New Jersey in 2002.
He played 12 years in the NFL with the new York Jets and Arizona Cardinals.
Coombs has coached for 35 years with the last six at Ohio State where he had been assistant coordinator for the defense and coordinated special teams. He also coached cornerbacks each year with Ohio State working with Marshon Lattimore, Gareon Conley and Eli Apple.
Bowen spent the past two seasons with Houston as a defensive assistant. He coached linebackers between 2013 and 2015 at Kennesaw State and was a defensive graduate assistant in 2012. Bowen started coaching in 2009 at his alma mater, Georgia Tech.
McKenzie was assistant special teams coach with the Rams last season. He played 19 games in the NFL with Tampa Bay and Minnesota. He coached two seasons of high school before coaching linebackers as a graduate assistant at Colorado in 2015 and was assistant defensive line, quality control coach with Stanford in 2016.
