Man auctioning his bad luck on eBay
Christopher Wilno has had more than his share of hard luck. Now he’s trying to see if his bad mojo is powerful enough to affect the biggest sporting event on the planet. And he’s doing it for a good cause.
Wilno, a football fan from Oak Park, Calif., is auctioning his bad luck on eBay, promising to root for either the Packers or the Steelers in the Super Bowl on FOX, depending on the preference of the highest bidder, and guaranteeing his support will spell doom for that team’s chances.
"You see, my cheering for the opposing team gives you a very good shot at winning the Super Bowl," Wilno says in his eBay ad.
Wilno says his football jinx started this past college season when he bought a Boise State hat and cheered for the Broncos, whose run at the BCS Championship ended with a loss to Nevada. He did the same for Oregon, which fell short in the BCS title game. Most recently, he helped end the Atlanta Falcons’ season.
Now, in an effort to put his powers to good use, Wilno promises to buy the opposing team’s hat, become an avid fan "up to and including" the Super Bowl, and engage in plenty of "smack talk" that will "virtually guarantee" a loss.
Wilno says his hard luck has extended beyond his football fandom. He says his daughter passed away, his father died from leukemia and his wife was diagnosed with cancer. For those reasons he plans to donate the proceeds of the auction to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The auction ends Feb. 3.
