Giants WR Smith out for year

Published Dec. 15, 2010 12:00 a.m. ET

New York Giants starting WR Steve Smith will miss the rest of the season.

The team said Smith was examined by team physician Dr. Russell Warren at the Hospital for Special Surgery yesterday and underwent an MRI to his left knee. He sustained an articular cartilage injury to his knee when he was tackled from behind in the Vikings game on Monday. Smith will require season-ending surgery which has yet to be scheduled.

And No. 3 WR Mario Manningham's (hip) status for this week's game against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles remains up in the air.

In addition, the Giants placed backup SLB Clint Sintim (knee-ACL) on injured reserve. To take his place on the 53-man roster, the Giants signed DE/OLB Alex Hall. This is the third stint for Hall with the Giants.

On Nov. 1, Hall was awarded to the Giants off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals. He was inactive for three games before being waived on Nov. 27, when CB Michael Coe was added to the 53-man roster.

Hall played in 2008 and 2009 for the Cleveland Browns. He was traded on Apr. 2 of this year from the Browns to the Philadelphia Eagles, who waived him on Jul. 28. Hall was awarded to the Giants off waivers the following day.

Hall played in three preseason games for the Giants and had eight defensive and one special teams tackles. He missed the preseason finale against New England with a shoulder injury. Hall was waived/injured on Sept. 4 and reached an injury settlement with the team.

The Cardinals signed Hall on Sept. 21. He was on the roster, but inactive, for four games before he was waived and awarded to the Giants.

Hall was chosen in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft, the 231st overall selection. In two seasons he played in 30 games with two starts and had 36 tackles (26 solo), three sacks and two forced fumbles. He also added 18 special teams tackles.

As a rookie in 2008, Hall played in all 16 games with two starts and finished with 26 tackles (18 solo), three sacks and 12 special teams tackles. Last year, he played in 14 games and had 10 tackles (eight solo) and six special teams tackles.

As noted previously, the Giants also shuffled their practice squad. They released DT Joe Joseph and signed LB Kenny Ingram.

Ingram was waived by the Giants on Jul. 30 and played this season for the Hartford Colonials in the UFL.
