Steelers want to keep Antonio Brown in Pittsburgh for rest of his career
The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t being coy about their feelings for All-Pro wideout Antonio Brown. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said Thursday that the club is already working on a new deal with Brown in the hopes of keeping him in Pittsburgh for the remainder of his career.
”I can say unequivocally we want Antonio Brown to retire as a Steeler,” Colbert said, via the Associated Press.
Brown, who is entering the final year of the $42 million contract that began in 2013, is coming off his fourth consecutive season with at least 100 catches. The Steelers gave the 28-year-old wideout an advance on his salary each of the past two seasons as a sign of good faith, and last summer told Brown — who came under fire in this year's postseason for a Facebook video he filmed in the locker room — that securing a long-term agreement would be their priority.
Colbert also acknowledged the Steelers’ desire to keep running back Le’Veon Bell, who can become a free agent in March, and said that the running back’s recent rash of injuries has not dissuaded the team’s belief in the 24-year-old.
”We have no reservations about Le’Veon, not his durability or his ability,” Colbert said. ”He’s grown I think tremendously off the field. I hope he continues to grow in those areas. There’s no hesitation to have him be with us for his whole career.”
Bell, who has not been available at the end of each of the past three seasons due to injuries, ran for 1,268 yards and seven touchdowns despite playing in only 12 games last season.
