Staying put: Vince Wilfork agrees to new contract with Patriots

Vince Wilfork will return with the New England Patriots in 2014.

Wilfork and the Patriots agreed to a three-year, $22.5 million contract, a source told ESPN.com's Adam Schefter on Thursday. Wilfork reportedly asked for his release and cleaned out his locker after discussions of an altered contract initially went poorly.

The big nose tackle was entering the last season of a five-year contract he signed in 2010. Wilfork tore his Achilles tendon in Week 4 of the 2013 season.

Wilfork can earn up to $8 million if he stays healthy in 2014, FOX Sports NFL Insider Mike Garafolo confirmed. His deal includes $3 million guaranteed and an option for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. His contract is not guaranteed after this season.

Wilfork hinted at progress in negotiations moments before news broke, tweeting a message to Patriots fans with a picture of an NFL contract.
