Report: Wilson, Seahawks talking but not making any progress

Published Apr. 14, 2015 5:48 p.m. ET

While the parties apparently are talking, reports indicate that Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks are far away from coming to terms on a contract that would solidify the signal-caller’s spot among the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

Multiple sources close to the situation have indicated that while discussions are ongoing, the sides are not making much progress toward a deal, per a Pro Football Talk report.

As noted elsewhere, there really isn’t a sense of urgency to sign Wilson to an extension, as the young quarterback is under contract for the 2015 season. After making a relative pittance over the first three years of his four-year, $2.9 million rookie contract, Wilson will make $1.5 million next season, which still is more-than-substantially below the quarterback’s obvious market value.

The question is, are the Seahawks willing to gamble with creating a situation where Wilson feels he is being disrespected by the organization in spite of the tremendous amount of success the team has enjoyed, thanks in large part to the quarterback’s stellar play?

Wilson has been diplomatic when discussing the need to get a deal done, saying he has complete faith that it will happen in due time.

“In terms of my contract, I don’t really talk about that kind of stuff,” Wilson said in March. “I love the game of football. I love playing the game of football. I try to put my best foot forward and I want to be the best to ever play the game. That’s the way I look at it.”

One of the most intriguing talking points of the offseason has been not only what the Seahawks intend to do about Wilson but also how they plan to go about it. Despite rumors surfacing on a few occasions that the signing of a massive mega-contract was imminent, no substantive reporting on the issue indicates the quarterback and the team are anywhere closer to forging a deal.

Wilson, though, reportedly is amenable to play on year-to-year deals under a franchise tag designation, meaning he’d be paid remarkably well but would lack any long-term security.

With all this uncertainty and speculation, Wilson nevertheless is carrying on in his role as team leader, even in the offseason. Even though Seattle’s offseason program officially doesn’t get underway until April 20, Wilson, as he has done in years past, has again taken charge. Under his leadership, he and teammates will convene in Hawaii to spend a week working out on their own, away from the coaching staff.
