Seahawks release pair in anticipation of signing cornerback Butler

The Seattle Seahawks cleared some roster space Tuesday by releasing wide receiver B.J. Daniels and running back Rod Smith.

The Seahawks are expected to fill one of those slots by signing journeyman corneback Crezdon Butler, per a report by the NFL Network on Monday.

Butler will be joining his seventh team since he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round in 2010. He was among the final cuts by the Detroit Lions in training camp. Butler appeared in 11 games and made his only three career starts with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, recording 14 tackles.

The Seahawks have depth issues at the corner following a spate of recent injuries. Marcus Burley is sidelined after undergoing thumb surgery and Tharold Simon was placed on injured reserve Saturday. In addition, Tye Smith missed last week's game at Cincinnati due to a hip injury.

Rod Smith had two carries for five yards in Sunday's loss at Cincinnati while Daniels appeared in two games, making one reception. Both could be signed to the practice squad if they clear waivers.
