49ers' Davis denies reports of two clashes with teammate Staley

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis disputed reports that he has been involved in a pair of skirmishes with left tackle Joe Staley over the past month.

“I don’t recall that,” Davis said Thursday. “I don’t know where that’s coming from. It’s funny to me.”

A blog posted on BayAreaSportsGuy.com reported that Davis and Staley clashed during a team meeting on Oct. 6 and had another skirmish following a loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 22. The latter incident reportedly occurred after Davis criticized Colin Kaepernick and Staley defended the beleaguered quarterback.

“No, I didn’t call Kap out,” Davis said. “I don’t know where you got that from. I didn’t call Kap out at all. It’s not my job or my role to call Kap out. I let coaches do that.”

The first squabble, according to the report, was a result of Staley questioning the severity of a knee injury that caused Davis to sit out two games - losses to the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants. Davis again denied there was acrimony between them.

“He’s been like a brother to me,” Davis said of Staley. “If anything happens with me and Joe, we’re going to be brothers. It doesn’t matter. I can’t recall us getting into something where he was mad at me; I was mad at him. I’ve never been mad at Joe. Ever. Maybe upset over some things.”
