49ers' Dial to appeal fine for roughing-the-passer penalty

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Quinton Dial will appeal an NFL fine for his controversial hit on Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer on Sunday.

Dial was whistled for roughing the passer on a sack of Palmer with just over 6 1/2 minutes to play on the game-winning touchdown drive in Arizona's 19-13 victory. Dial's helmet appeared to hit Palmer high on the chest and just below his chin.

“Anything I would have changed? No,” Dial said Wednesday of the play on which he incurred the $17,363 fine. “I don’t think the ref saw it clearly.”

Palmer disagreed with Dial's assessment in his postgame remarks. “He hit me right in the face with the crown of his helmet," Palmer said. "I don’t think there’s any debate over that.”
