San Francisco 49ers: Eric Reid Injury Puts Season In Jeopardy

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

As expected, it has been a year to forget for the San Francisco 49ers. And things could get worse if star safety Eric Reid has indeed suffered a serious injury.

Coming into the season, we knew the San Francisco 49ers would have major problems moving the ball on offense. Outside of Carlos Hyde and occasionally Jeremy Kerley, it’s hard to praise any of the skill position players.

However, the defense has been almost as bad. The 49ers are dead last with 5.1 yards per carry allowed and they allow the most yards and points per contest in the NFL.

Free safety Eric Reid has been one of the few bright spots for the 49ers this season, though. But there’s a chance he suffered a serious injury in the team’s 30-17 loss to the New England Patriots, who benefitted from four Tom Brady touchdown passes.

Reid is not that much of a household name, but he is one of the NFL’s most athletic safeties and has been a real asset for the 49ers since his rookie year. The first-round pick out of LSU made plenty of big plays in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals, recording his lone interception. Reid has 55 tackles this year after putting up 71 of them in 2015.

The 49ers already shut down defensive end Arik Armstead earlier this season and a torn bicep would have to be season-ending for Reid. NaVorro Bowman and rookie Will Redmond are two other notable names on the 49ers defense that are in the injured reserve, and hopefully Reid won’t have to join them. He’s a joy to watch and he and Tramaine Brock give the Niners two sure-fire building blocks in the defensive backfield.
