Stress fracture or not? 49ers' Hyde calls injury 'something like that'

Published Oct. 23, 2015 1:43 p.m. ET

San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde caused a bit of a stir when he told a CBS sideline reporter prior to Thursday's game against the Seattle Seahawks that he is dealing with a stress fracture in his left foot.

Hyde then went out and played, rushing for 40 yards on 11 carries in a 20-3 loss. Following the game, when quizzed by the media if he does have a stress fracture, Hyde responded: "Something like that."

In Sunday's game against Baltimore, Hyde crumpled to the ground in pain without being touched on a second-half carry. He described the pain Thursday night as a "6" on a scale of 1 to 10.

“I just take it day-to-day,” Hyde said. “Try to stay off of it as much as possible, let it rest. And try to prepare each week for that game by staying off of it.”

San Francisco coach Jim Tomsula likened the injury to a bruise earlier in the week but declined to elaborate about the severity of it after Thursday's game.

“He has a foot issue, and I don’t get into the specifics of injuries,” Tomsula said.
