Melvin Gordon swears his fumbling days are over with the Chargers

Published Oct. 20, 2015 8:04 p.m. ET

Melvin Gordon has only himself to blame for a nightmarish homecoming.

The Chargers' rookie running back fumbled twice in front of family, friends, and fans at Lambeau Field on Sunday -- and was unsurprisingly benched.

“I feel like I could have been out there helping the guys out,” Gordon told reporters. “And I wasn’t out there because I made some mistakes."

Perhaps drafting the native Wisconsinite so high was a mistake, too. He has 299 yards on 78 carries with no touchdowns through six weeks. And then there's that fumbling problem; he's lost three of them.

Gordon promises that a league-leading fifth fumble won't happen anytime soon, though.

“It’s just something that’s not allowed, and you have to focus on the ball more than anything," he said. "That should be your main priority when you’re running the ball as a running back, and I know that. But it happens, and you just have to bounce back.”
