Pats put Gronkowski on active roster

Published Aug. 31, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

The Patriots will carry tight end Rob Gronkowski on their active 53-man roster, FOX Sports NFL Insider Mike Garafolo confirms.

Gronkowski, who is still recovering from offseason surgeries to his back and forearm, is not expected to play in New England’s Week 1 matchup against the Bills.

If the Pats had put Gronkowski on the physically unable to perform list, he would have had to sit out the first six weeks of the season.

Gronkowski, 24, is one of the best tight ends in the NFL, hauling in 38 touchdowns in his first three seasons in the league.
