Report: NFL fines two Broncos for helmet hits on Cam Newton

The NFL has fined Denver Broncos safety Darian Stewart $18,231 and linebacker Brandon Marshall $24,309 for their helmet-to-helmet hits on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, according to ESPN.

Stewart was one of several Broncos who made contact with Newton’s head in Denver’s win last Thursday night, but he was the only one to draw a roughing-the-passer penalty. And even that penalty was offset by a call on the Panthers on the same play. Marshall was not penalized during the game but drew a larger fine.

Newton remained in the game despite speculation he may have had concussion-like symptoms, and both the league and the NFLPA have launched a review into whether the league’s concussion protocol was handled properly by team and medical personnel.
