Report: Browns' Bess plagued by erratic behavior

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Davone Bess’ arrest in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Friday for assaulting a Broward County sheriff’s deputy, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence, reportedly is not the first time he has displayed bizarre behavior, according to the Miami Herald.

First, the arrest: Bess was at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. The Herald says the arrest warrant reads that Bess was acting “acting irrationally,” singing and dancing with his pants falling down.

The Heralds adds: Thomas O’Brien, who works the airport detail and was in uniform, approached Bess. The wideout then crushed a cup of coffee on him and got into a fighting stance.

O’Brien hit Bess with his ASP (baton). Bess was unfazed, taking off his shirt and getting into a fighting stance.

It wasn’t until backup arrived that Bess surrendered and was taken into custody. The Herald reported that the deputy believes Bess was on drugs at the time of the incident.

“He appeared to be looking through me when I was talking to him,” O’Brien wrote.

This isn’t the first time Bess has been involved in bizarre behavior, according to the paper.

Ten months ago, authorities found the former Miami Dolphin in a similar state of disarray at his home.

Six BSO deputies were needed on that night to restrain Bess, who was screaming, "Hide the guns," "Where is my weed?" and "I want to get in the end zone; throw me the football," according to the incident report.

According to the Herald, in the incident at his home. the first deputy arrived and observed several large males trying to restrain an agitated Bess. The deputy noted that he smelled a strong odor of cannabis coming from the master bedroom.

Bess was trying to throw the men off him and was incoherent, according to police. Once the police were finally able to pin him down, Bess was Baker Acted -- or hospitalized without consent. He was taken to Memorial East Hospital for observation.

The Dolphins traded Bess to the Browns a month after the incident. For the time being, the Browns are stuck with him, as NFL rules prohibit teams from cutting players until the day after the Super Bowl.

Bess was already under scrutiny for two pictures of what appears to be marijuana he posted on Twitter in recent days. When asked about “weed’’ upon his release from jail on Friday, he joked that the reporter should call Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden.
