John Harbaugh told reporters on Monday that he’s “hopeful” Baltimore Ravens receiver Steve Smith Sr. can play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

You never rule out Steve Smith,” Harbaugh said, via ESPN’s Jamison Hensley.

After watching Joe Flacco struggle badly against the Cleveland Browns in Week 5, there can be no doubt Smith would be a welcome addition to the Ravens’ failing offense. In addition to Smith, Baltimore was without Michael Campanaro and of course rookie Breshad Perriman, who has yet to take a snap.

The veteran wideout is recovering from four microfractures in his back. When his injury was first reported, the biggest factor to whether or not he could play was his pain tolerance. As many are aware, Smith is one of the NFL’s legit tough guys, so if Harbaugh feels hopeful about seeing the old man go on Sunday, it’s probably going to happen.

If Smith can play against San Francisco, then there’s a good chance Flacco’s currently flaccid numbers will be inflated. The duo should be able to feast on the porous secondary of the 49ers, which has allowed 299 passing yards per game, ranking 30th in the NFL.
