Could Ryan Mathews see more touches for the Eagles after the bye?
In Sunday night's Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews provide the offense a spark with his 63-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but he finished the game with just nine total touches.
At this point it is becoming hard to argue that Mathews is not a better fit for head coach Chip Kelly's scheme. The outside stretch and sweep runs are a staple of this offense, and as DeMarco Murray has learned the hard way, they're not going away.
If Kelly wants to continue to go away from the power-blocking run plays, Mathews needs to get more snaps. He totaled 121 yards compared to Murray's 70 despite seeing 11 less total touches. Over the course of the season, Mathews has been the more effective back on a per touch basis.
With a Week 8 bye, the Eagles have some extra time to consider a potential change in the backfield. Mathews' role going forward will surely be a big topic of conversation between the Eagles' offensive coaches.
