Eagles release Riley Cooper, best known for racially charged rant

Riley Cooper, the Philadelphia Eagles receiver best known for his racially charged rant that was videotaped at a 2013 Kenny Chesney concert, was released by the team Monday.

The Eagles announced the transaction on their Twitter account.

Cooper, who became a full-time starter under then-new coach Chip Kelly that summer, caught 47 passes in 2013 and 55 in 2014 but tailed off to 21 this year. Kelly was removed as coach and head of personnel heading into the final week of the season, and it’s likely Cooper's spot wasn’t as secure with new coach Doug Pederson taking over.

Cooper, 28, signed a five-year contract extension worth $22.5 million in February 2014.
