Philadelphia Eagles release former Pro Bowl DE Connor Barwin

The Philadelphia Eagles entered Thursday with almost no cap space to speak of. They were towards the bottom of the league in that regard, hindering them from going out and adding wide receiver help for Carson Wentz.

That changed Thursday morning when they announced the release of veteran pass rusher Connor Barwin, freeing up $7.75 million.

Eagles vice president of football operations, Howie Roseman, issued this statement regarding the news, praising Barwin and thanking him for his work the past four seasons.

Since 2013, Barwin’s first year with the Eagles, he’s racked up 31.5 sacks and five forced fumbles, proving to be one of Philadelphia’s top pass rushers, if not the very best.

He made one Pro Bowl with the Eagles in 2014 when he had 14.5 sacks, his best season in the NFL. He hasn’t reached that number since, and with the Eagles moving to Jim Schwartz’s Wide 9 defense, his fit was questionable at defensive end.

He thanked the Eagles with a post of his own on Instagram.
