Peter Schrager Podcast: Let’s talk some free agency

Peter Schrager is back from Sochi and the Peter Schrager Podcast is back, too. This week’s episode is a bonanza of free-agency talk and is broken into two parts.

Part 1 is an interview with NFL agent David Canter, and Part 2 is with former Jets director of football administration Ari Nissim. The free-agent signing period is tackled from both sides of the negotiating table — agent and team — and both perspectives are provided.

Canter, an agent for 18 years, represents newly signed Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Paul Soliai. Though Soliai got a five-year deal, with a guaranteed $11 million coming in 2014, the agent says the cards are stacked in the team’s favor.

“The goal of the NFL and the management council and the owner is to get the best labor for the cheapest prices,” Canter said. “That’s why there is a new rookie system that allows that.”

Always outspoken, Canter goes through the harsh realities of being an NFL player. One of his clients, nine-year veteran Steve Gregory, was released the day before the start of the free-agent signing period.

In Part 2 of this week’s podcast, Nissim, the chief contract negotiator for the Jets from 2007-2013, provides the team perspective on free-agency week. Nissim goes into a team’s approach to free agency, the NFL Draft, and offers memories on various contract negotiations during his time with the Jets, including Tim Tebow and Darrelle Revis.
