The Carolina Panthers placed defensive end Antwan Applewhite and free safety Sherrod Martin on injured reserve Tuesday and released offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges.

The Panthers filled the open roster spots by signing running back Armond Smith and offensive lineman Thomas Austin to the active roster from the practice squad and signing defensive end Mario Addison from Washington's practice squad.

The 6-foot-3, 257-pound Addison entered the NFL in 2011 as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Chicago Bears.

He spent time with Chicago, Indianapolis and Washington during his career. He has played in 14 career games, including eight this season split between Indianapolis and Washington.
