NFLPA exec: Wells Report delivered what the NFL wanted
By Doug Kyed
Roger Goodell has had time to review the NFL Players Association’s request he recuse himself from being arbitrator in Tom Brady’s appeal. The NFL commissioner hasn’t responded yet, however, according to NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith.
Smith said on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” on Friday the NFLPA will “increase the volume” of their request if the NFL doesn’t respond by the end of next week.
Smith was critical of the Wells Report, saying it “delivered exactly what the client wanted.” He also questioned the independence of Ted Wells’ findings.
“You have one part of the Wells Report crediting the recollection or the memory of the referee, and then you have the other part of the Wells Report criticizing or questioning the memory of the same referee,” Smith said. “So, you can’t really have credibility just because you slap the word independent on a piece of paper.”
No date has been set for Brady’s appeal, the league office told ProFootballTalk Friday.
