NFL, transit agency review Super Bowl rail logjam
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Transit and National Football League officials are reviewing what could have been done to avoid the massive train backup in New Jersey after the Super Bowl.
More than 30,000 people rode trains between MetLife Stadium and Secaucus Junction. That's double the highest estimates made before the Super Bowl. The huge crowds were stuck on the platforms at the stadium for hours after the game.
Some fans taking trains to the game also faced delays.
NFL executive vice president Eric Grubman said Monday many fans bought rail tickets on the morning of the game and that the high numbers overwhelmed the system. He says the lesson for next time is to give as much attention to transportation contingencies as to weather contingencies.
New Jersey Transit executive director James Weinstein planned to comment later Monday.
