Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick last in NFL on downfield throws

Ryan Fitzpatrick isn't considered to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but he's played a big part in getting the Jets to a 5-4 record. He's thrown for 1,938 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while showing outstanding toughness, playing through torn ligaments in his thumb.

But for as good as he's been, he's had his struggles, too. One area where he can certainly improve is with his downfield accuracy. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, Fitzpatrick has completed just 4-of-26 passes traveling 25-plus yards downfield. That comes out to a completion percentage of 15.4, worst in the NFL.

With big receivers like Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker on the outside, Fitzpatrick's low completion percentage is somewhat shocking. Rookie Devin Smith, a dynamic big-play receiver at Ohio State last season, can certainly help in that category, but he's struggled to move up the depth chart.

The Jets win game with stout defense and a heavy dose of the run, so downfield passes aren't a big part of the offense. But late in the game, it's hard to think the Jets will be able to push the ball with deep passes when needed.
