Report: New York Jets to work out Matt Flynn on Friday

Published Aug. 14, 2015 10:21 a.m. ET

After losing 23-3 in horrific fashion on Thursday night, the New York Jets have made their first substantial move with regards to finding a backup quarterback for Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Ryan Fitzpatrick didn't play particularly bad in the preseason opener, but he also attempted just three passes. Rookie Bryce Petty, however, was less than sharp. He completed just 10 of 18 passes for 50 yards, making good on word that he isn't ready to be an NFL starter.

With no capable backup seemingly on the roster, the Jets are set to work out Matt Flynn on Friday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The former Patriots quarterback was released by New England earlier in the week due to injury, but with the Jets in no rush to sign a quarterback, he could be an ideal fit in New York. Unlike Petty, Flynn has plenty of experience in the league, playing for four different franchises in nine seasons.

The big question regarding Flynn is whether or not he can pass a physical if he does indeed get signed by a team. His elbow injury has been slow to heal, which is what led the Patriots to release him.

Along with Flynn, the Jets have also shown interest in veteran Rex Grossman, while they've nixed the idea of a reunion with Michael Vick.
