Confident Geno Smith spotted throwing outside of apartment

Geno Smith has apparently lost the confidence of the New York Jets locker room this summer, but he hasn’t let it get him down. Following his broken jaw and successful surgery, he came out swinging with some bold words.

Throwing passes in front of his apartment complex, Smith displayed the same brash confidence he’s shown throughout his short NFL career.

“I feel great. You see me throwin’, right?” he told The Post, his speech slightly slurred by the swelling.

The Post notes that Smith was “strangely wearing eye-black tape during the casual toss.” Maybe the pain meds had something to do with that, but perhaps the word “strangely” could have been axed for the word “hilariously.”

Following that statement, Smith’s message for Jets fans was simple: “Get ready for me to come back.”

It’s nice to know the young quarterback hasn’t lost his confidence, but one wonders if he has a firm grasp on his current situation. There have been whispers that the locker room has turned against Smith following his encounter with IK Enemkpali, with the rumor that he “deserved” getting clocked in the jaw.

Furthermore, even his staunchest ally, receiver Brandon Marshall, whom he roomed with this summer, seems to have moved on already.

“I’m just moving forward,” Marshall said. "I think the whole team is moving forward. I think you’ll hear that echoed throughout this locker room. It’s time for us to move forward and play ball.”

Ryan Fitzpatrick is tabbed to start Week 1 under center, and the Jets have already brought in Matt Flynn for a workout and physical.

By the time Smith does return to action in the next five to nine weeks, he may find that nobody wants him to come back. During his first two years as a pro, the West Virginia product managed to complete just 57.5 percent of his passes while throwing just 25 touchdowns compared to 34 interceptions in 29 starts.
