Giants release starting RB Rashad Jennings

The New York Giants are getting ahead on their spring cleaning.

In addition to releasing veteran wide receiver Victor Cruz, the Giants are also reportedly cutting ties with their leading rusher from 2016.

Jennings rushed for 593 yards and three touchdowns this past season, struggling to gain yards with any sort of consistency. He averaged just 3.3 yards per carry with his longest run in the final six games being 19 yards.

The Giants will save about $2.5 million against the cap by releasing Jennings, whose cap hit was going to be $3 million in 2017.

The move not only opens up cap room for the Giants, but it also gives way to Paul Perkins as a potential candidate to be the starter. He showed flashes of potential late in the year as his role increased, rushing for 102 yards in Week 17.

It also creates a situation where Adrian Peterson could potentially be brought in if he’s released by the Vikings. He named the Giants as a team he would be interested in if Minnesota cuts ties with him.
