Report: Patriots acquire former 2nd-round pick Kyle Van Noy from Lions

The New England Patriots didn’t wait until next week’s deadline to make a trade. On Tuesday, they made yet another swap, adding a linebacker for the third consecutive season.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Patriots sent a sixth-round pick to Detroit in exchange for linebacker Kyle Van Noy and a seventh-rounder.

Van Noy was taken by the Lions in the second round of the 2014 draft but has struggled since then. He has just 39 tackles in two-plus seasons, though 23 of them have come this year. Van Noy has just one career start.

He’ll add to the Patriots’ depth (or lack thereof) at linebacker where Jonathan Freeny is on injured reserve and Jamie Collins and Dont’a Hightower are the only reliable players at the moment.

Last year, they traded for Jon Bostic, and one season prior, they landed Akeem Ayers. This has become a trend for New England, especially considering they also added Barkevious Mingo back in August.
