Kirk Cousins on criticism: I watch HGTV, not ESPN

Kirk Cousins isn’t playing outstanding football, but the Washington quarterback has intentionally avoided the criticism he knows is out there.

According to Mike Jones of The Washington Post, Cousins said he’ll sometimes avoid major and local sports networks, instead watching and listening to completely unrelated entities.

“The way that I don’t listen to what they’re saying is, I don’t listen to what they’re saying. I turn on NPR instead of 106.7 or 980 sometimes. I turn on, you know, HGTV instead of ESPN.”

Cousins continued, admitting that it’s relatively easy for him to tune out the negative talk because he doesn’t have an established Internet presence.

“I think there are times when you can intentionally block it out, if you’re asking how to do that. I don’t have a lot of social media on my phone so it’s not quite as accessible to me as maybe it is to some other guys. There are ways you can nothear it and it doesn’t do me any good to hear that.”

The 27-year-old has thrown a touchdown in each of the six games he’s started, but Cousins has also tossed two interceptions four times. Washington, which is 2-4, lost every one of those outings.

However, if Cousins can successfully block out the noise and product on the field, Washington still has a decent shot at squeezing its way into the playoffs. The team is only one game behind the 3-3 Philadelphia Eagles for first place in the NFC East.

A win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday would certainly help Cousins quiet critics—even if only for a week.
