Chiefs’ trainer: Jamaal Charles has ‘been through this before’
Jamaal Charles is the exception, not the rule, when it comes to rehabilitation.
So says Chiefs head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder, who says the star running back has everything aligned to make another speedy ACL comeback.
“There’s a lot of factors that go into it – the physician that does the surgery, the person rehabilitating him, the athlete, the athlete’s position, all that kind of stuff,” Burkholder told reporters. “He’s really in a really good place right now, considering everything that’s happened just a couple days ago.”
Knee rehabilitation is old hat to Charles now. The four-time Pro Bowler suffered the same injury on his opposite knee just four seasons ago.
Charles bounced back in record fashion. He's had rushing seasons of 1,200 and 1,500 yards since going under the knife; Burkholder suspects he'll attempt to duplicate that process and find similar results.
“We’ve got a plan in place where we’ve talked to the physician, Dr. (James) Andrews, who did his surgery in the past,” he said. “It looks like he’s leaning that way, to go back down there and get it operated on by him again.”
