Jets wise to limit workload of Matt Forte in 2016

As the New York Jets proved their commitment to establishing the run, they’re wise to limit the workload of running back Matt Forte this season.

It’s no secret the New York Jets can brag about their potent rushing attack. So far just two weeks into the regular season, their running backs have totaled 275 rushing yards, 66 attempts, and three touchdowns. The Jets at this point in time have one of the top offenses in the NFL thanks to how effective their rushing attack has been.

Running back Matt Forte has started hot right out the gates. With a chip on his shoulder due to the Chicago Bears not re-signing him, the Jets knew he’d be exactly what they need to replace the departing Chris Ivory.

Forte has lived up to his potential but it’s imperative the Jets don’t overwork him in the grand scheme of things. Considering that Forte is 30-years-old and suffered a hamstring injury last season, it’s best they adjust their game plan and give others opportunities to alleviate his workload.

Running back Bilal Powell is truly an underrated gem on the Jets’ offense. While Week 2 prominently featuring Forte who totaled 100 rushing yards, 30 attempts, and three touchdowns, Powell didn’t see much action.

As the Jets prepare to once again hit the road in Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs, they should limit the amount of reps Forte gets.

The Jets have a two-headed monster at running back as they should have Forte start things off with Powell finishing.

Head coach Todd Bowles even knows it’s important to not give Forte so many reps every game throughout the season.

There are still plenty of games left to play and if the Jets are to truly be contenders this season, they must keep Forte fresh all year long.

As per the Media Relations Department of the Jets here is what Bowles had to say about keeping him healthy and not overworking him:

On if keeping Forte healthy and requires reducing his workload…

I don’t think he’s going to get 30 carries every game. That’s going to be different every game. So somebody else is going to have to step up weekly, be it run the ball or throwing the ball. He just got it this game. The workload I’m sure won’t be the same. There will be more people chipping in.

Overall, it’s great to see Forte off to such a wonderful start in his debut season with the Jets. The Jets are wise to limit his workload to ensure Forte is in a position to push this team into the NFL Playoffs. It will more than likely come down to the final slate of games which they’ll need Forte ready to deliver.
