Jets should target Stephon Gilmore in free agency

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 1:46 a.m. ET

With the NFL season officially being over, the New York Jets will look to address many areas of opportunity via free agency and a player they should target is cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

The New York Jets have a lot of needs on both the offensive and defensive side of the football and now they will look to make improvements. The defense struggled last season in pass coverage. The lack of depth at the cornerback position allowed opponents to score many points. Head coach Todd Bowles will look to bring in some veterans who have the ability to take this defense to the next level.

The defense for the Jets was amongst the worst in pass coverage and struggled in depth and leadership. They had too many blown assignments and the players looked lost and didn’t communicate with one another. One player that should be on their radar is veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

If the defense wants to improve in the secondary than they need to make that change immediately. Gilmore will help with the deep ball coverage and he would be a very good option to have.

SNY’S Ralph Vacchiano stated: “The New York Jets will look to begin to shore up a secondary that was a mess last season”. Gilmore is the best corner on the market”. Just this past season, Gilmore had 48 combined tackles and 5 interceptions. He is a very hard worker and will continue working on improving the details of his game each day.

Gilmore could be one suggestion the Jets use when cornerback Darrelle Revis decides to retire from the game. Each game he improved his defensive skills for how many yards he gave up throughout the season. With his aggressiveness, it could make the Jets defense tougher and better as a team.

Overall, Gilmore is a very good football player that teams would love to have.  This is one move that could be a smart and effective decision for the Jets as they try to establish a bright future, especially on a struggling defensive secondary.
